America the Beautiful

Old Timey Tuesdays! It’s easy to dismiss patriotic tunes as cornball, out of touch, or overly sentimental. However, even the most familiar old songs can contain surprises. We thought we knew all the back verses to “America the Beautiful,” but we stumbled upon some obscure lyrics dating back to the turn of the 20th century that are timeless, inspiring, and noble.

We chose this tune for this week because of the line, “Oh beautiful for pilgrims’ feet.” According to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, as of 2017, 65.6 million people have been forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations. Under the leadership of She's Folks member Tyler Thompson, we’ve teamed up with Wild Earp, Praytell, Hillary Marren, Jacob Mau, Daniel Fager, Sharriese Hamilton, Stephanie Weber, and Quentin Rynbrandt, along with sponsors Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits and Half Acre Beer Company to present Fixed Abode III: A Variety Show at the amazing Low Res Studio to raise money for GirlForward, an organization that assists refugee girls living here in Chicago.

Why girls? “In conflict, girls are especially vulnerable to violence, isolation, and being kept out of school. Girls who receive resettlement in the face huge challenges: poverty, language barrier, limited or disrupted education, isolation and a trauma. But when girls succeed, everyone benefits.” Join us this Friday, January 26 for a joyful and uplifting evening of music, story, art, food, drink, and hear from the Girls themselves. Refugees are welcome here.
