The House of the Rising Sun
Happy Halloween and Old Timey Tuesday! “How,” Betsy asked herself one day, “can I combine my love of old folk tunes with my love of camp and drag?” Enter Hell in a Handbag Productions and Caitlin Rose, Robert Williams and the inimitable David Cerda. Today’s tune may be familiar to most thanks to the Animal’s classic 1964 rendition. However, the melody itself dates back to 17th century Britain. It made its way to the United States and became the song we know today. It may come as a surprise that the original American lyrics, circa 1905 or 1925 (depending on the source), were told from the perspective of a woman. We restored them in our version of “The House of the Rising Sun.”
