When Johnny Comes Marching Home
Old Timey Tuesdays! This week Ted, Tyler, Tyler, and Betsy are digging into a Civil War era song (1863) that is both patriotic and protest, celebratory and mournful, hopeful and haunting. We picked lyrics from both the original version, and also "Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye" which dates to a few years later in 1867. I wanted to juxtapose the mood of a song at the relative beginning of a conflict, and one written after. Sobering, sure, but a classic nonetheless. And if this is all too heavy, well there's always "For Bowls" which is the version that is used as a drinking song. Here's our little spin on "When Johnny Comes Marching Home!"
